Dr. Bruce Lautenschlager is an experienced educator who has dedicated more than 37 years to helping students, especially those often overlooked by the education system. Raised in a rural community, his grounded personality and straightforward style shaped both his leadership and writing. He began as a sixth- and eighth-grade teacher before serving as Dean of Students, Assistant Principal for twelve years, Principal of an underperforming Title I middle school, and later Dean at an Alternative School. Alongside his career, he earned a master’s degree in School Administration, a Superintendent’s license, and eventually a Ph.D. focused on high-performing Title I schools in Indiana, all while working full-time and raising a family.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lautenschlager has worked closely with students facing expulsion, addiction, abuse, grief, and juvenile justice involvement, believing they need understanding and structure rather than rejection. Known for his strong belief in accountability, relationships, humor, and personal connection, he often makes home visits, checks on students daily, and supports families beyond his formal responsibilities. Although offered a comfortable central office role, he chose to return to working directly with students because he felt happiest helping kids firsthand. Together with his wife, who is also a Principal, he raised three sons and continues to approach education with honesty, compassion, and real-world wisdom.
